22 Accessible Road Trips contains useful and detailed information about accessible travel, that's readable, informative and pertinent. The book is aimed at those who use wheelchairs, walkers or just have mobility issues. Organized geographically, the book is divided into 22 chapters, with each chapter detailing a loop driving route that can be completed in approximately 2-3 weeks. The routes are spaced throughout the US, with each route having a theme or a commonality. Each route begins in a gateway city with a major airport, so the trips can also be completed as fly-drive packages. And of course they can always be broken up into shorter trips, or even day excursions. Flexibility is the key with this book, with plenty of opportunity to personalize each route to meet individual tastes, time frames and budgets. Candy includes details about accessible lodging, sites, trails, attractions and restaurants. She also gives readers a real flavor of the drives, with off-the-beaten-path finds, unique roadside attractions and rural driving routes also included. After all, accessibility is in the eye of the beholder; and what may be accessible to one person can be filled with obstacles to someone else.;Drive, She Said, Road Trip Tips and Resources, Pacific States: 1. Patrick and Anne Simpson first captured the interest and admiration of people everywhere with their book Wheelchair Around the World, in which the couple shared the excitement and challenges of living out their dream of travel around the globe—despite Anne's need for a wheelchair. Their inspiring energy and determination will touch readers again as they chronicle their journey across New Zealand and Australia.
From the glory of New Zealand's Southern Alps to the heart of Australia's Outback, the Land Down Under comes alive for armchair and wheelchair travelers alike in Wheelchair Down Under. Join the couple as they travel the "Land of the Long White Cloud," where they meet the Wizard of Christ Church, explore a deer farm and Pat hikes "Lord of the Rings" country. Then experience Oz as they travel to Australia's land of Mad Max, opal mines, Crocodile Harry and characters from the mad gold rush days. Explore Australia's colonial beginnings as "Jail of the Empire," climb Uluru (Ayers Rock) and sail across the Outback with them.
Throughout their tales, the Simpsons constantly provide tips and insight into the dos and don'ts of wheelchair travel. In sharing their experiences, the Simpsons not only guide us across the Land Down Under, they also motivate us to seek out our own dreams.

101 Accessible Vacations: Travel Ideas for Wheelers and Slow Walkers is the first guidebook dedicated exclusively to wheelchair-accessible destinations, lodgings and recreational opportunities. Penned by Candy B. Harrington, the editor of Emerging Horizons , this new title focuses on the vacation planning needs of wheelchair-users and slow walkers. 101 Accessible Vacations contains destination information on over 101 cities, lodging options, national parks, tourist attractions and recreational activities around the country. The book is organized so readers can search for a holiday based on their specific interests or travel styles. Unlike other guidebooks that are organized geographically, 101 Accessible Vacations includes sections ranging from Road Trips and The Great Outdoors to Historic Haunts and Cruisin. And last but not least, there is Candys Picks, which includes a collection of some of the author's favorite trips, destinations and activities. Candy describes the access of all attractions, lodging options and tourist sights, rather than just stating that something is or isn't accessible. After all, accessibility is in the eye of the beholder; and what may be accessible to one person can be filled with obstacles to someone else. Says Harrington, There's a world of travel choices out there for wheelers and slow walkers. And this book contains many of those choices; along with updated resources, information and access details to make them a reality.

Many wheelers and slow walkers interested in travel assume that inns and bed and breakfasts will be inconvenient, inaccessible, or unaccommodating. Candy Harrington debunks this myth in There is Room at the Inn: Inns and B&Bs for Wheelers and Slow Walkers. She shows that inns and B&B's can actually be more accessible than many hotels, and than inn staff and management are often personally invested in accommodating their guests. Through a combination of personal experience, on-site visits, and interviews with innkeepers and other travelers, Harrington has discovered the most friendly and accessible properties, and brings her expert recommendations to the reader. Harrington's list includes not just the most accessible inns, but those in which the staff and management are the most wheelchair-positive. She includes a variety of locations from every area of the country, and also based her selection on wheelchair accessible activities and attractions in the surrounding area. With her personal, engaging style, and clear writing, Candy Harrington reminds the reader that everyone is entitled to travel, and that, with a little advice and planning, it can be fulfilling and rewarding for everyone.

The idea of traveling around Africa on crutches could be as daunting as the thought of climbing Kilimanjaro would be for most travelers. But that didn't stop Helen Bergan from setting off alone for an African odyssey in 1968. In Climbing Kilimanjaro, she invites readers to travel with her and share her adventures in nine African countries. To see a non-tourist Africa, Helen traveled by local bus and visited outdoor markets throughout the continent. Despite obstacles presented by her disability, and as a woman traveling alone, she took a Dutch freighter from Kenya to South Africa and a Nigerian ship from Lagos to London. With an adventurous spirit and her sensitivity to Africa's history, Helen describes encounters with people she met who either lamented or applauded the changes that independence brought to Africa. In each country, she sought out authentic African food and, in this book, shares some of her favorite recipes adapted for American kitchens. Like those who climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, Helen describes the splendid view of her Africa.

Josh Bleill tells people he had "one bad day". On October 15, 2006, while on a combat patrol in Fallujah Iraq, an IED (improvised explosive device) struck Josh's Humvee. The explosion tore through the vehicle killing two of his fellow marines and severely injuring Bleill and his best friend. Josh awoke five days later with the news of the loss of his two friends and both of his legs. One Step at a Time: A Young Marine's Story of Courage, Hope, and a New Life in the NFL follows his journey from his enlistment then on to active duty in Fallujah, through two years of rehab, and ultimately to his job as the community spokesman for the Indianapolis Colts. Readers will be inspired by his undying enthusiasm, infectious joy, and sense of humor. Everyone has had that "one bad day". Josh discovered that life begins when we embrace our bad days and keep going forward, one step at a time.

Premanently crippled in a fall from a horse, Liz Fordred refused to accept the limitations assumed for her in the Rhodesia of the late 1970s. She met and eventually married an equally (if more quietly determined) accident survivor named Pete Fordred, and together they hatched an audacious plan to build a boat and sail around the world. That they lived more than 1000 miles from the ocean and had never sailed before did not stop them. Neither would their lack of money or the fact that basic boat equipment was impossible to obtain in Rhodesia. Fabricating metal parts, learning carpentry, and resolutely tackling one seemingly insoluble problem after another, they built their boat in three years, trucked it to the South African coast, rigged it, learned to sail and ultimately sailed the boat to America, where they forged a new life in Florida.
